The Best Car Drying Towels Compared!

The best drying towels reviewed

Five highly rated drying towels compared to find out which works the best. The drying towels tested are Griot’s Garage PFM, Griot’s Garage PFM Edgeless, The Rag Company Gauntlet, Mckee’s 37 Glacier, and Chemical Guys Woolly Mammoth. Read on to find out which is the best car drying towel!

Testing Methodology

Before starting the test, the car was given a good wash to make sure it was clean. The testing process was to use a pressure washer to wet the entire car and then dry the entire car with the towel. During the process I evaluated how the towel was absorbing water, how easy it was to use, and how it performed when it started to fill up with water.

Griot’s Garage PFM (“Pure Freaking Magic”) is a 20″ x 28″ terry weave drying towel. This towel started off the test superbly! It was fun to use and initially did an excellent job drying the car. Towards the end it did start to feel pretty full and it’s drying power diminished. This was one of my favorite towels and I would have loved it more if it was larger. Maybe a future review will include Griot’s larger drying towel?

Griot’s Garage PFM Edgeless is a 29″ x 36″ double-ply drying towel. This towel was hard to use since it was thick and heavy. It didn’t easily conform to the car on vertical panels making things like doors hard to dry. Typically, you don’t want to apply too much pressure on your car’s paint because it might create scratches. With the weight of this towel, I feel like I would have had to apply unnecessary pressure.

The Rag Company Gauntlet is a 30″ x 36″ hybrid twist loop and microfiber drying towel. This towel is huge! On the first pass, the towel did not pick up all the water (microfiber does work better when wet). After another pass this towel really started to shine. The size and weight of the towel is perfect and gives it great versatility in drying large hoods, door jambs, and body contours. The Rag Company Gauntlet is an exceptional drying towel.

Mckee’s 37 Glacier is a 20″ x 30″ twist loop, edgeless drying towel. Mckee’s 37 Glacier is an effective drying towel. There’s no doubt this can soak up a good amount of water. This towel was also among the heavier towels which made it a bit more difficult to use.

Chemical Guys Woolly Mammoth is a 25″ x 36″ microfiber drying towel. Chemical Guy’s Woolly Mammoth drying towel is a large, soft, nice to use towel. Its effectiveness is mediocre, filled up rather quickly, and lost its drying capability. At it’s current price of $30, I would easily pick one of the other towels in this review.

Conclusion

All these car drying towels were interesting to review! Some were effective and enjoyable, and others not as much. Overall, I preferred the twist loop ends compared to plain microfiber as I feel like they were able to absorb water better and it was easier to use. My pick for the best car drying towel goes to The Rag Company’s Gauntlet. It has a hybrid design consisting of twist loops and microfiber. The extra large size was perfect to finish the car and even go back for touch ups.
